The early photographs were made using glass plates covered with light-sensitive chemicals. These glass plates were both heavy and fragile. The American invented George Eastman decided to try to produce something better. In 1884, after four years of experimentation, Eastman produced a photosensitive film consisting of paper smeared with a gel. He had solved the major problems of glass plates. In 1888 he produced what he called the Kodak Camera. This was a light and small and made use of long roll of film so that a number of photographs could be taken without opening the camera. Modern Calendar   December 12th, 2008

By the middle of the 16th century it was becoming increasingly obvious that there was something wrong with the calendar. The longest day of the year was supposed to be June 21, but in fact it fell ten days earlier. More importantly for such a religious age, was the suspicion that this might mean that religious festivals were being held on the wrong day. In February 1582 a papal commission reported on the problem. They had been working for some years at the Villa Mondragone on complicated chronological data. The pope who read the report was Gregory XIII. He at once realized its significance and introduced the new calendar, which the report recommended within a month.

Ming Dynasty   November 30th, 2008

The Ming dynasty is probably the best known Chinese family of Emperors. They ruled for more than 300 years and their period is noted for its magnificent blue and white porcelain and some fine textiles. The first Ming Emperor came from a very unlikely background. In the 1350’s Chu Yuanchang was a Buddhist monk who became increasingly annoyed at the despotic rule of the Mongol Khans. Joining a band of untrained rebels, he quickly showed his skill as a warrior and became their leader. By 1364 he had thrown the Mongols out of the lands north of the Yangtze River. Four years later he stormed into Peking and declared himself Emperor as Hung Wu.
